A NIGHT OF 80's MUSIC WITH THE KING OF ITALO DISCO, GAZEBO

Italo-disco is a genre of dance music that was popular during the 80s and 90s. It evolved from the then underground dance music to the synth-filled pop sound. It usually consists of English vocals, mid-tempo and rhythm, with the emphasis on lead synths. A lot of people, then and now, don't know what Italo-disco music is. There is a distinct sound to it different from another genre of music. It can be said that Italo-disco is a sub-genre of new wave music. 

Among the popular artists associated with Italo-Disco music are Giorgio Moroder of Human League, instrumental in pioneering Italo-Disco, Paul Parker (who covered Cyndi Lauper's Time After Time in 1985), Sabrina (of Boy, Summertime Love), Mike Francis (of Let Me In, Survivor, Friends, Suddenly Back to Me), Ken Laszlo (of Tonight, 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8), Baltimora (of Tarzan Boy, Woodie Boogie), Raf (of Self Control), Silver Pozzoli (of Around My Dream, From You to Me), Scotch (of Take Me Up), Spagna (of Call Me), Sandra (of Everlasting Love, Maria Magdalena), and of course the King Of Italo-Disco himself, Gazebo (of I Like Chopin, Lunatic, Masterpiece, Tycoon). 

Gazebo, born Paul Mazzolini, is known as the King of Italo-disco music. He gained popularity in the 80s via the songs I like Chopin and Lunatic, among others. When it was announced he would be having a concert this year, I immediately bought a ticket to secure my seat. His songs had been part of my teenage years. Even at present, I still play his record on component and turntable. 

The concert was full of nostalgic music as he sang his hits I Like Chopin, Lunatic, Masterpiece, Coincidence, Dolce Vita, Love in Your Eyes and Telephone Mama. He opened the show with the late Mike Francis song, Survivor. It was Mike Francis who encouraged him to visit the Philippines. He also performed Tarzan Boy by Baltimora and Give Me One Day by Europe (of 628 fame). At one point, he sang I like Chopin in acoustic, and it was a great version. He has good interactions with the audience. Gazebo's voice doesn't change a bit. He can still carry those big, high notes.

I was able to have my CD autographed by him. It's unfortunate I don't have my vinyls with me. The organizer, DMC Philippines, also gave a free concert shirt. The three Djs who performed before him were also awesome. The 80's music really got into me and others who attended the event. I can't stop reminiscing about the time when these songs were dominating the airwaves at that time. It is also good to see people of your age singing and dancing like teenagers again. It was a night to remember. 

By the way, Midas Hotel and Casino Tent, is a perfect venue for the said concert. The concert was not overcrowded. It's more like an exclusive corporate event. I went back to my room, singing those songs in my mind.
